In a polarised election, where votes for the major parties increased at the expense of other parties, The Greens still increased their vote. Greens preferences were crucial to Kevin Rudd's victory, with many seats including Bennelong won because of Greens voters giving their second preference to Labor.
In Bradfield, the Greens held on to their 2004 vote, gaining 11.2% of the lower house primary vote. In the Senate we achieved over a 2% swing to the Greens, polling 12.7%. The booths with the highest swings were Asquith PS, Chatswood West, Hornsby Girls High, Kissing Point, Sacred Heart Pymble, St Ives Park PS, St James Turramurra and Warawee PS.
In Berowra, the Greens also held their 2004 vote, gaining 9.2% of the lower house primary vote. In the Senate we achieved a 1.2% swing to the Greens, polling 10.3%. The booths with the highest swings were Arcadia, Berowra Heights, Cherrybrook Central, Dangar Island, Hornsby Heights, Mt Ku-ring-gai and Wisemans Ferry.
In the Senate, there was an average 2% swing to the Greens in the Senate right across the northern suburbs of Sydney, consolidating and building on the 6% swing to the Greens across northern Sydney in the 2004 federal election.

Greens Senator Kerry Nettle will host a community forum in Hornsby to engage with local residents on climate change – the single biggest environmental issue of our time.
“It is important that communities come together to tackle this massive threat. The forum will give people in the local area an opportunity to learn more and to have their say. The Greens offer real solutions to climate change, but we need to engage with communities in order to make them happen.” said Senator Nettle.
CLIMATE CHANGE: WHAT CAN BE DONE?

Both Labor and the Liberal Coalition voted together in June 2005 to pass into the law the Part 3A changes to the Environmental Planning & Assessment Amendment (Infrastructure and Other Planning Reform) Bill 2005.
The new Part 3A powers downgraded community involvement and gave sweeping new powers to the Minister for Planning, Frank Sartor. Labor is the culprit here but they could not have passed these new laws without the votes of Liberal MPs, including the Member for Ku-ring-gai, Barry O'Farrell. The Greens, Democrats and Independents opposed the bill.

Greens candidate for Hornsby, Catherine Turner, has joined with Greens NSW Upper House candidate and education spokesperson John Kaye today to condemn the NSW Government’s management of TAFE.
Dr Kaye said: "State and Federal governments have slashed their commitment to TAFE. Between 1998 and 2005, expenditure on TAFE fell by 22% per student hour in real terms.
"This has had disastrous consequences for TAFE teachers and students. Courses have been shortened and cut, workloads have become unreasonable and qualified applicants are being turned away. The spectacular growth in fees and charges is having a devastating impact on students from low income backgrounds. Student poverty is becoming a real problem.

In 2004 Greens candidate for Ku-ring-gai, Susie Gemmell and her family decided to convert the family swimming pool into a pond.
What started out as a whim has transformed their backyard into a micro-wetland teeming with native fish and frogs, lizards, birds, dragonflies and much more. It has become a nature lover's paradise and a focus of family life in the Gemmell household.

For the first time, Ku-ring-gai residents are faced with an environment election. Halting climate change, saving water and stopping over-development from ruining our suburbs are at the forefront of this election campaign.
People are fed up with this tired, cynical Labor Government. There is a mood for change in the electorate but Peter Debnam has not shown the leadership on the tough decisions about energy and water, and he is firmly committed to the Howard Government’s workplace laws.
The Greens offer a real alternative this election. More Greens MPs in the Upper House could continue the push for more open government, for real action on climate change and for the rights of local communities to have their say on development.

MEDIA RELEASE
15 February 2007
Greens candidate for Ku-ring-gai, Susie Gemmell today said the news that Johnson Property Group has sought approval for the SAN Hospital re-development under the major projects category of NSW's planning laws is bad news for Ku-ring-gai.
"Under the new planning laws voted in by Labor with the support of Liberal MPs the community will have no meaningful input on this project and the environmental impact can be ignored by the Planing Minister when he makes his decision," Ms Gemmell said .......

Both the Liberals and the Greens have identified overdevelopment as the biggest state issue facing local residents. But we have a very different approach to planning and development. Liberal Member for Ku-ring-gai, Barry O'Farrell and his Coalition colleagues voted together with the Government in 2005 to pass planning legislation that gave the Planning Minister unprecedented new powers to override Ku-ring-gai Council and Hornsby Council decisions and ignore community concerns. These new powers will be used to approve the big re-development of the SAN Hospital site and the six high-rise sites along Ku-ring-gai’s railway line. The SAN's developer, Johnson Property Group, gave the second largest developer donations last year, giving $74,250 to NSW Labor and $37,000 to the NSW Liberals. The Liberals walk on both sides of the street when it comes to planning. Liberal MPs tell community groups they oppose overdevelopment, but the Liberal party accepts millions of donations in donations from developers and votes for legislation that favours developers.

Health care

Many people living on the North Shore enjoy a high standard of health care with private health insurance. But there are people in every community that still fall through the health care gap.
The Greens are passionate about making sure the NSW health system serves everyone who needs it, not just those who can afford it. ........

The Greens were really looking forward to contesting the first environment election in NSW. But Labor and the Coalition haven’t shown the commitment to tackle climate change. You wonder if they have forgotten about the deadly threat of climate change already?

Jo-Anne Lentern is the Green's candidate for the electorate of Davidson for the 2007 NSW State election. Jo-Anne Lentern - DavidsonJo-Anne Lentern has been a member of The Greens for over ten years. She runs a sound recording business with her husband, and is the mother of two teenage children. She has campaigned extensively on nuclear issues, and is passionate about the threat of global warming.
"These are critical days for all of us in Australia. The decisions we make today will determine the legacy we leave for future generations. "We urgently need to put a price on carbon. That means levies on our coal exports, and a carbon tax on domestic use. That money could then be poured into renewable technology like wind, solar and geo-thermal power generation, creating thousands of jobs.
